Lima, Ohio - A back-and-forth game saw solid pitching, as both clubs threw for eight punchouts, both offenses collected timely hits (three lead changes and three tie scores), and the Lima Locos tied the Lake Erie Monarchs, 4-4, after completing nine full innings, just before a weather delay resulted in the official ending of the contest. Per GLSCL rules, the game results in a tie for both clubs.
Statement from GLSCL Commissioner, Dr. Kim Lance: "For clarification purposes, NCAA Rule 5.8 outlines the criteria for a regulation, tie or no game. That information can be found on pages 19-21 of your 2010 GLSCL Operations Manual. Also, page 6 of your operations manual gives specific examples for clarity. Hope this helps."
Per the GLSCL Operations Manual, RULE 5, SECTION 10. a., states, "A regulation tie game shall be declared by the umpire-in-chief:
(1) If the score is tied when play is terminated after five or more equal innings, or
(2) If the team that went to bat second is at bat when play is terminated and has scored in the uncompleted inning the same number of runs as the other team."
RULE 5, SECTION 10. b., states, "Any regulation game called by the umpire with the score tied shall be declared a 'tie' game."
Additionally, the rule additionally reads, "Note: All individual and team averages from a tie game shall be incorporated into the official playing record."
Tom Richardson (Chattahoochee Valley CC) provided the magic for the Locos in the bottom of the ninth inning. On a two-two pitch, Richardson doubled off the right field fence, a double which scored pitcher, Austin Blaski (Marietta College), the pinch runner for Kody Krizman (Wright State University), who pinch hit for Cam Luther (University of Michigan) in the clean-up slot. Krizman singled on a three-one pitch to right field. The Locos' rally stopped after Richardson's double in the ninth as no more scoring occurred.
Here is the call from Locos play-by-play man, Kevin "Tug" McGraw:
