SHAWNEE
TOWNSHIP -- It all comes down to today.
And it's all because of one wacky, zany night at Shawnee High
School.
The Locos used numerous ways to score and had two of their
coaches ejected in a 10-7 victory over Delaware in the loser's bracket
finals elimination game of the Great Lakes Collegiate League tournament
Friday night.
The Locos (3-1 for the tournament) will meet Grand Lake (3-0)
in the finals at 4 p.m. today at Shawnee. The Locos need to beat Grand
Lake twice (second game at 7 p.m.) to win the title. Because Grand Lake
is unbeaten -- it sent the Locos to the losers bracket with a 6-3
victory earlier in the day -- a win over the Locos at 4 would give the
Mariners the GLCL championship.
Locos shortstop Jacob Robbins led the way, going 5-for-6 with
three stolen bases, two runs and an RBI. Bryan Bonner and Eric Severson
were both 3-for-4 for the Locos. Travis Fultz and Martin Baker both had
two RBIs.
In a game that went back-and-forth, the Locos trailed 4-1 in
the third inning and 7-4 in the fifth.
"We did a nice job of getting our chances to go ahead and
play in that championship round tomorrow," Locos coach Rob Livchak
said.
The Locos tied the game at 7 with a three-run fifth. They
went ahead 9-7 in the sixth.
Fultz's sacrifice fly to center in the sixth gave the Locos
the lead to stay, 8-7. Shaun Pfeil's RBI single to left in the sixth
made it 9-7.
Locos head coach Livchak and assistant coach Jimmy Morris
were both tossed out over a play at first base in the fifth inning with
the Locos trailing, 7-6. That left assistant coach Nick Morris in
charge the rest of the game.
"I think when Rob and Jimmy got thrown out, it got everybody
excited," Robbins said. "I've never been more excited this whole summer
than I was right there. I was so pumped up, the whole team was pumped
up. The crowd got into it. Everyone got into it."
Locos reliever left-hander Josh Varno from Wapakoneta picked
up the victory. He came on in the fifth and tossed 1 1/3 perfect
innings of relief with three strikeouts.
Varno said, "Actually, I had all three pitches working for
me. It was all working pretty good today."
The Locos scored their first run when Travis Jones scored on
a wild pitch. They would later score in the fifth on a wild pitch and a
passed ball.
The Cows took a 7-4 lead with three in the fifth. Brad Winter
gave the Cows a 5-4 lead with a solo home run to left.
Baker's RBI groundout to second brought the Locos within 7-6
in the fifth. The play at first on Baker was close, and Jimmy Morris
was ejected by the home plate umpire for expressing his opinion from
the third base coach's box. Livchak then voiced his thoughts to the
first-base umpire and was gone.
Livchak said he wasn't trying to get the team fired up when
he received his ejection.
Now the Locos must beat Grand Lake twice, a team it had a 5-1
advantage over during the season, but a team it lost to earlier on
Friday.
"We have to stay relaxed, stay focused and keep the same
energy we had tonight going into tomorrow," Robbins said.
Grand Lake 6, Locos 3
In the winner's bracket semifinals earlier on Friday, Grand
Lake sent the Locos to the loser's bracket finals.
Derek Martin paced the Grand Lake attack with a 4-for-5 day
and one RBI. Adam Abraham went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.
Dock Doyle went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Grand Lake scored two in the third inning and added three
more in the fourth to make it 5-0. The Locos got within 5-3 with a
three-run eighth.
Grand Lake starter Brian Rumple (Western Michigan) went 2-1
with a 1.65 earned-run average during the year. On Friday, he earned
the victory by going 7 1/3 innings. He gave up three runs, one earned.
Coldwater product Kyle Heyne picked up his second save of the tourney.
LOCOS NOTES: Locos catcher Sean Boley was hit by a pitch in the back of
his right hand in the eighth inning of the 5-3 victory over Cincinnati
on Thursday. Boley said he was fine before the game and got the start
against Grand Lake.
In the first loser's bracket elimination game Friday,
Delaware eliminated pesky Granville, 3-2. Nate Freiman's solo home run
over the left-center field fence in the home sixth inning broke up a
2-2 tie and gave the Cows the 3-2 lead.
A number of scouts sat in the back row of the bleachers on
Friday. The scouts represented the Mariners, Angels and Major League
Baseball.
